Gin & Tonic

Let me just tell you guys about the history of the Gin & Tonic. If you notice, the brand of Gin being poured into the glass in the top picture is “Bombay,” and the bottle on the bottom says “London Dry Gin.” Since gin is traditionally a British spirit, the historical implications of the Bombay brand, especially, are very interesting.

Back when the British Empire colonized India and surrounding countries, including Pakistan, the British Army had to combat the rampant and devastating mosquito-borne illness, malaria. The drug of choice back then (and believe it or not, even now sorta, with derivatives) was something called quinine. But, as is the case with most medicines, it tasted like shit. Bitter shit.

So, British soldiers decided to put the quinine in sparkling, or carbonated, water mixed with sugar, lime and, you guessed it, gin. The dissolved quinine in sparkling water was called tonic or tonic water, and boom, liquid medicine that doesn’t taste too much like bitter shit.

Today, the modern tonic water has less quinine content (but still enough to make it glow under UV light!). Just the same, you could use any sort of soda water you want, like Sprite, I guess. Just don’t use coke, ‘cause… idk, that seems kinda gross and avant-garde, and I’m afraid of change.

More history here.

Ingredients:

2 or 3 oz. gin
1 or 2 lime wedges
6 oz. tonic water (club soda)

Directions:

1. Pour the gin first in a glass with some ice
2. Squeeze the limes into the gin
3. Pour the tonic water
